Hi Folks,
After giving in my fist film trailer analysis of 'Skyfall', my teacher gave us another exam task that would help us to analyse print texts e.g posters, magazines, billboards etc.Anything that is 2D, on paper.
Below is the written poster analysis of the two James Bond posters 'Skyfall' and 'For Your Eyes Only'.
Analysing
Posters-James Bond
For this
essay I am going to be analysing and comparing two posters, using media
terminology and definitions. The two posters that I will be analysing and
comparing are James Bond ‘Skyfall’ and James Bond ‘For Your Eyes Only’.
Skyfall
is the most recent James Bond film and is rated as the ‘best bond film ever
made’. This film is special because it
marks the 50th anniversary of the character James Bond and the films
and the theme song is called ‘Skyfall’ and is sung by Adele. ‘For Your Eyes
Only’ was released in 1981 and the theme tune was sung by Sheena Easton.
As with
everything there are always similarities and differences. The overall
similarity is that they are both advertising the same film series, with the
same character and the overall difference is that they are from different
decades, even in different centuries.
The most
obvious similarity between both posters are in the portrait position which
shows that the production team have stuck to the original basic design. Within
both of the posters the main character is wearing a suit whilst holding a gun.
This suggests to the audience that the main character is dangerous, or on a
mission. It also shows that there is an air of sophistication about the
character and the film. Another similarity is that the titles are both big,
bold and white which catches the reader’s attention. However the font is
different. I think this is because of the release dates and how technology has
advanced over the years.
The main
difference between both of the film posters is that there is 31 years between
them being released and because of this the images on the posters are extremely
different due to technology. ‘For Your Eyes Only’ looks more cartoon/comic/animated
because the poster looks drawn and the light effects on the poster look more
drawn than photographic, whereas ‘Skyfall’ is more photographic and the
graphics are more realistic and eye-catching. Both posters have completely
different colour schemes, which portray completely different messages to the
audience. For Your Eyes Only has a lot of bright, bold colours and the main
colour used is red. The colour red could suggest blood, danger, love, sex or
lust. The positioning of the main characters is different in each poster. In
‘Skyfall’ the main character is positioned at the very front of the poster
which shows that the whole film is just about the main character and no-one
else. However the ‘For Your Eyes Only’ poster the main character is placed at
the back of the poster. I think this is to show the audience that the film is
going to introduce a new character or to show that James Bond has a new arch
nemesis and he/she is more important. This is also another way of convincing
the audience to watch the film. In addition to this ‘For Your Eyes Only’ poster
has the James Bond actor’s name where the ‘Skyfall’ poster does not. This shows
that the films and character of James Bond is so famous and closely followed
that there is no need to write the actual actors names or the character’s name
on the poster.
After
looking at both of the film posters and comparing them, I have come to the
conclusion that there are a lot more differences between them both than
similarities. I have also found that as technology improves the posters become
more photographic and the designs become simpler.
Looking at this analysis and the first one I did I think that the one above is better because I had the material in front of me and I could continually look at the posters and compare them with each other as many times as I wanted.
The next post will be with the two pictures of my analysis of the posters.
