Extra Links

Previously Unposted

After yesterday's post, I remembered that I had a a few more links that helped me with my pre-production work.

Pre-Productions- This is the work that has to be completed before any filming can be started. This stage includes, writing scripts and storyboards for the setting of the film and the actors.  The film idea also develops more within this stage.

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/ripper-street-episode-1.pdf       - This link here is from the BBC website. It is the first part of the 'Ripper Street' script. I used this link because it helped me with the layout of my script and it also showed me how to introduce new characters/ settings etc. I definitely found this link to be helpful .. and I hope you (my audience) do to :)

Coursework: Links

Previously Unposted

To help me create the best possible coursework piece, I decided to do some of my own research by looking at different links on the internet to help me write my own treatment to pitch my film to the rest of my media class.

Below are some website links to the information that I researched.

The first link does not work properly, so you have to type it manually into your search engine. This one is a
a guide on how to write a script.

The second link does work and is a guide on how to write a treatment.

The last link is a step-by-step guide on how to create a storyboard.  (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storyboard) This link explains in better detail than I every could what a Storyboard is  :)

Analysis - James Bond

Previously Unposted

Helloo Bloggers

In one of my double Media Studies lesson, my class was asked to answer 2 exam based questions as homework , but we could start making a plan in class.

The questions we had to answer were to analyse the HD OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR SKYFALL.

These are the two questions ,and my answer to both:

    1)      Analyse the extract of the text commenting on the Visual codes, Technical and audio codes and Genre convention.
When the film trailer is starting the Camera angle is at an extreme close up angle of a man’s eyes. As the camera zooms out you get to see more of the main character and what the film is all about. This is a genre convention code because James Bond is such a well-known film that the character has become a genre all his own.
At the very start of the trailer the scenes/images are flashed on the screen at a very fast pace to show that the film is an action film which is a form of genre convention and the type of editing is called flash cuts. Another genre convention that is shown within this trailer is all the explosions and weapons, which is typical of a James Bond film.
The facial expression of the main character is always set straight and stern which shows that the character is on a mission. The character also does not make eye contact with the camera much. This could hint that the character is so focused on the mission and the mission only and determined to succeed. Some of the other scenes hint that the character is in deep thought and not paying attention to what is going on.
The use of dark colours such as black, dark blue and grey hints that the film is very mysterious and, that there is a mystery to be solved within the film. This also hints at the genre of the film. However the use of white on a dark background shows again that there are secrets within the film and also hints that James Bond is on a secret mission. However there are also bright colours used to maybe show, again, the different location.
The set design throughout the trailer hints that the film is not going to be set in just one location but in a multiple locations. This catches the audience’s attention as it shows that it won’t be the normal James Bond film just set in one location.
Throughout the trailer there are a number of different camera angles/shots that heighten the audience’s interest. Arial/Bird’s eye view shots are used quite a lot within the trailer to show as much of the action as possible without giving too much of the plot away.
The narrative of the film trailer hints at the genre of the film through the different types of scenes that are show. For example there are a lot of scenes with fighting/explosions which hints that the film is going to be an action film. This also shows that it conforms to the normal conventions of an action film.
The trailer also shows the two different types of characters: round and flat. The flat ‘characters are the ‘villains’ that James Bond is seen chasing after/fighting. The round characters are James Bond, ‘M’ and ‘Moneypenny’.

2) Explore representations covered within each of the texts.
The trailer of Skyfall shows the main character, James Bond, to be very distinguished and sophisticated. It also shows him to be very ‘cool’, even in a crisis and that nothing phases him. It also represents James Bond as being indestructible and not even death can defy him. This also hints at the ethnicity of the film as it is showing that British people are smartly dressed and sophisticated.
The trailer is trying to show that Britain is a great country and that Eastern-European people in general are ‘bad’ and ‘evil’. The trailer does this by making the villain of a foreign ethnicity. It shows that the film is British through the use of the Union Jack on the coffins and the British accents that the characters have. This is a type of representation about ethnicity and national identity. Also the uses of expensive British cars such as the Astin Martin are used to portrey the British culture. The ethnicity is also being represented through the different types of location, such as Shang high, Scotland, and London. This is significant as they are famous landmarks.
Gender is a type of representation that is shown within this film trailer. The scene where James Bond is in a bar and seeming to be drunk/ drinking heavily shows that even a man such as James Bond has weaknesses.
The type of dress code that the main character always wears hints at his social class. By this I mean that his dress code is always sophisticated and smart which hints that his is part of the high/elite class.

Another representative that the trailer contains is events. The event that I can identify is that obviously the film that is coming out and also the fact that this film is like no other James Bond film before as they hint that James Bond gets shot and then they use coffins that are covered with the Union Jack, which again hints that something could happen to James Bond.

This is my first attempt on a trailer analysis.. In my own opinion I think I have managed to give a pretty clear analysis of the trailer :)

Please Note: The link may not work when clicking on it , so you may need to type it in or alternatively you could type 'hd official skyfall trailer' into YouTube and it is the first video on there :)

New Topics

Previously posted on 9/11/12

Hi guys,

Since going back to my Media Studies lessons after the half term I have had an introduction to analysing and comparing posters of the same genre.
For Example: The new James Bond 'Skyfall' poster and an older James bond poster such as 'For Your Eyes Only'.

I have also been introduced to analysing different magazine covers with the same main topic. As Skyfall is the newest James Bond movie and is highly talked about, I started to learn about how you can have the same topic within a selection of different magazines but the way the topic is portreyed is completely different for every magazine.

How adverts and Film trailers are successful

This is another topic within my Media Studies that I have been introduced to. By this I mean how an advert makes the target audience want to buy the product or how a film trailer makes the audience want to go and see it.

As I have only been back a week I have not got much else to say about these topics, but do not fret, as soon as I learn any more about these or any other topics I will definatley write a blog about it :)

Comments would be much appreciated as well, and any constructive criticism :)

Hi guys,

After looking back at my very first blog post I realised that I have missed out a few topics that  I should have mentioned before.

The other bits and pieces that I have learned about within my Media Studies are :

  • Mis-En- Scene- which is basically all the props within a scene that
  • Camera Angles/Shots- I learnt that there are many different camera angles/shots. For example: Extreme Close-up (which is showing something in isolated detail) and Extra long shot( which is a camera shot from very far away).
  • Music- How to analyse the music within a film and how it effects the audiences reaction.
  • Technical Codes- These are : Sound, Editing, Types of Shots, Camera Movement and CGI Technology.
I have also learnt how to make a story board of a film using only 6 scenes. ( I will upload a photo of it at a later date.)

As I mentioned in my first post, this is only the introduction to Media and there is a lot more to come and I look forward to learning everything :)

Starting Out

Previously Posted 4/11/12

Hi everyone,

Before I started my Media course at the start of September 2012 all I knew about the Media was, that it was everywhere and was made up of all different types e.g. music, newspapers, television, magazines, books, the Internet etc. But since then I have found that there is more to the media than meets the eye.

On the outside Media seems to be easy to understand, but when you delve into the details of it, there are a lot of different meanings, terminology, and new topics that are quite complex.

So far within my Media Studies I have learnt new terms and their meanings and also different types of media.I have also learnt about stereotypes and how the media portreys them The very first things that I learnt about media , was stereotypes and genres within films and how to analyse films/media texts.

When learning about different genres I found that different film genres had different codes and conventions( which are things which the audience expects to see within a film). For example: In a horror film the you would expect to see blood, dangerous weapons, dark scenes, scared characters, creepy/spooky music etc and a romance film you would expect to see a boy meets girl love story with lots of bright cheerful colours such as red and yellow, with happy music and a happy ending.

Learning about Narrative theory within Media and how every film has a story that follows certain theories is not very complex, I found that it is easy to get confused with all the theories. Within the Narrative Theory I found out about 4 different men who came up with different theories about films/stories. The 4 theories that I know about are:
1) Levi- Strauss- He came up with the Binary Opposition Theory which basically means that within every film/story there are opposites e.g. night/day, good/evil
2) Todorov- This man stated that every narrative is put together using the EQUILIBRIUM theory. This is when everything in the film/story is fine at first and everything is stable( as it should be), then a problem occurs which messes up the equilibrium.( Disequilibrium), and at the end of the film/story the setting is slightly altered but is still intact ( New Equilibrium)
3) Vladimir Propp- His theory is that every narrative has 31/32 functions and 8 different character types. The 8 character types are: The Hero, The Donor, The Villain, The Dispatcher, The Helper, The Princess, The False Hero and The Princess' Father.
4) Barthes- He came up with Five Codes which are put into every narrative. the two most important are: The Hermeneutic Code which means there is a mystery within the film/story which keeps the audience guessing and The Proairetic Code which creates tension within a narrative.

Analysing media texts/films is easy once you know how. All you have to do is say what you see and give a reason why, but just using some media terminology such as visual codes, narrative, camera angles etc. If I can do it anybody can :)

And that is what I have learnt within 8 weeks of my Media Studies :)

Now to learn all about analysing and comparing film posters or two pieces of text.
