Coursework: Working Progress

Due to the amount of coursework changes and dedicated time to my other subjects I haven't had a lot of time to post on my blog about a range of different media related topics.

So to show you, my audience, how my coursework is progressing.  Below is the 3rd draft of my poster. I still have a lot of work to do on it, however I like the overall idea of it and the way it looks so far :)

Genre - Mixed Signals

This is another link post (sorry), so i'm going to make this post short and sweet
 ( well try to anyway :) )

I know most of my blog posts have a link or reference to the media edusite website , however it gave me lots of information on how to classify my coursework into a genre.

When deciding on the genre I went straight into thinking about my idea. Using this method I confused myself so I went back to stage 1 in the planning process and got into researching different types of genre, to work out which ones are the best suited to my coursework idea.

The link below is a television  drama genre , however it give a list of why drama's are classed the way they are.

http://media.edusites.co.uk/article/television-drama-codes-conventions/

From using this link I decided that my idea may have drama, however it wasn't enough for my film idea to be classed in the drama genre.

Although the link didn't help me, I hope you , my readers, do find it useful :)

Script: Sneaky Peak

Previously Unposted

When I started to think about writing my script I decided to write the whole script out first and then change it after I had a basis to work on.

Reading through my script I wrote down a list of things I would like to change and try writing differently.

Below is a typed out list of the things I wanted to change to make my script look professional:
* Change protagonists age to 6 years old.
*Add in INT. and EXT. to every scene
* Capitalize important words e.g. actions/props
*Capitalize all characters names.

Here is a snippet of my script:

INT- LIVING ROOM- DAY
4 YEAR OLD LAUREN is KNEELING on the LIVING ROOM LAMINATED FLOOR, playing PEEK-A-BOO with LEWIS her 1 YEAR OLD BABY BROTHER.
The faint sound a RAISED VOICES can be heard.
LAUREN’S MUM, TARA, SHOUTS up to her from the KITCHEN.
TARA
‘LAUREN, change LEWIS’ NAPPY FOR ME PLEASE’

LAUREN
‘YES MUM.’
LAUREN RUNS to the TOP of the KITCHEN STAIRS and takes the BABY CHANGING BAG, and DRAGS it back to where LEWIS is on the FLOOR.
LAUREN
‘LEWIS, your big sister is going to change your nappy.... again’

LAUREN starts to change LEWIS’ NAPPY, and the RAISED VOICES start to get LOUDER. SECONDS later the DOORBELL RINGS and the RAISED VOICES immediately STOP.
LAUREN finishes changing LEWIS and RUNS to the FRONT DOOR to answer it.  She PULLS OPEN the DOOR and SMILES at the MALE FIGURE STANDING OUTSIDE.
LAUREN
‘Hi Uncle John, Mum and Dad are in the kitchen’
UNCLE JOHN WALKS through the FRONT DOOR and into the LIVING ROOM. LAUREN SHOUTS down the STAIRS to her parents.
LAUREN
MUM...DAD... UNCLE JOHN IS HERE’
UNCLE JOHN, looks at LAUREN and gives her a SMALL PINK GIFT BAG.
UNCLE JOHN
I thought you might like to borrow this book. I have just finished reading it and I thought you might like it.

I hope this sneak peak of my script helps any of you media fans to either create your own script or to see how a script can be put together :)

Comments and E-mails welcome.

BARB: Evaluation Links

Previously Unposted

Using the internet has become a very easy way for me to collect all of the information that I need. To help me write up my coursework evaluation I used a range of different websites. Some of them I have already added to previous posts. However here are a few that I have only just recently used.

The link below is a massive internet database that collects weekly and monthly viewings of all television shows. The website is called BARB and it stands for Broadcasters, Audience and Research Board. I did check with my teacher that it would be a trusted source to use within my evaluation. I was informed that this particular website is an excellent source to use because it is trusted by all examiners and gives up-to-date information.

Hope these websites help you find the information you need :)

Media Studies 2: Coursework Research

Previously Posted on 17/3/13
When looking at true story films, I looked at the target audience for ‘The Lovely Bones’, which is mainly the female population, ages 13-20+. It would also target crime/mystery lovers, true movie fans and fans of the original book.

Using the website http://www.barb.co.uk I found that ‘Call the Midwife’ had a ratings of 10.18 million viewers on 30th December 2012 and 10.85 million viewers on the 3rd February 2013. This shows there’s a huge audience out there that enjoy watching films/TV programmes based on real life. This research helps with my marketing campaign as it shows that I need to persuade a wide audience range to see my film.I also found the last ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ rating was 42,000 viewers on 28th March 2010, which again shows there is   a wide audience range.
Questionnaires for my focus group

I undertook primary research through a focus group by asking them questions about my idea, noted down their answers and adapted my work towards their responses. From this I decided to target my film towards the female population aged 12 +. Using the website http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/12a-and-12 I looked at the requirements of the 12 age rating. I kept this age rating as it allows me to retain most of the real story, without offending the audience.

As my film covers a range of genres, it will appeal to the general population. My primary target audience is the female population aged between 12-30 years old, as the protagonist is shown through the stages of her life as she grows up, and true movie fans as this is a different type of true story. My secondary target audience would be fantasy-drama lovers (mentioned above), and would appeal to them through the concepts of the film.

I went on the look at audience demographics. Using; http://www.howtodothings.com/business/a3607-how-to-identify-a-target-market.html helped me to justify my target audience clearly. Everyone in the world is categorised into a ‘class’ which are:  upper class, who are the very rich e.g. The Queen, middle class who have enough money to live a luxurious life style e.g. Manager, and working class, who are average/everyday, people e.g. shop assistants. Due to this their incomes are considerably different which would affect my target audience of my film.  My target audience involves the working class more as they would understand the plot line more and are more likely to have gone through something similar/ know someone who has. I’m going to target mainly the female population, as the film is female based, aged between 12-30. This is my primary audience. I also looked at the psychographics for my film. The personality of the audience is significant as the more ‘timid’/shy person is more likely to watch my film than a ‘bold’/outgoing person. The interests/hobbies of the audience is significant as not everyone likes true story movies.

Knowing  target audience, I researched audience theories. The one that applies to my work is the uses and gratification theory because it reflects my work and it shows how an audience relates to what they see, which is how I want my target audience to react to my film.

Media Studies 2:Starting the Investiagtion

Previously Posted on 12/3/13-

As part of my coursework I had to write an investigation to show how I researched the genre of my film idea and how I used my research within my production pieces.  Below is the first part of my investigation.

My coursework project required to come up with a film idea and make it come to life. I decided to create a script for my pre-production and a teaser poster and a DVD cover for my production tasks. I chose this option because through my practice task, I enjoyed experimenting with the dialogue, which lets me be more creative.

My film idea has a range of genres combined into one plot. The main genre is true story, which means that it is non-fiction and factual. I chose this genre as a friend of mine had an unpleasant childhood and I wanted to show how, not everyone has the ‘perfect life’ and how they deal with these imperfections. To ensure anonymity, I altered the characters names and situations so more people could relate to the idea. As this story is close to my heart I studied the codes and conventions of the genre, to ensure my information was correct, shown opposite.

Using http://www.filmsite.org/subgenres2.html I looked at other genre types and chose fantasy-drama as they interlink with my main genre. The fantasy part interlinks as the protagonist has a fantasy world that she uses as an escape from the harshness of reality. The drama links in through the storyline, due to the domestic abuse/psychological references.

I conducted secondary research on the main genre by looking at true films such as 'The Blind Side’, 'Titanic', and 'The Lovely Bones'. I analysed film posters to get a better understanding of what my poster should convey, e.g. images/ typography. Creating a mood board of the film posters/ DVD covers helped me to compare/ contrast the colours/ layouts/ typography used. (images below). I also used: http://www.imdb.com/list/2xHGLzvIkzA/ and http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ to study the types of non-fiction films to get a better understanding of story lines and to see how audiences rated certain films e.g. The Lovely Bones.

Researching my sub-genre on http://media.edusites.co.uk  helped me understand the codes and conventions, shown opposite. I also looked at types of fantasy-drama T.V. Series to help me construct my characters e.g. Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

For help writing my script I searched all over the Internet to find bits of information that would help me to make my script the best possible grade on my script.

I found some website links that gave me different information about scripts.
http://www.sellascript.com/Source/column.cfm?mode=display&columnid=5
http://thescriptlab.com/images/SampleScript/FeatureScreenplayFormat.pdf
http://www.simplyscripts.com/WR_format.html

All of the links above do work if you click on them :)

The first one gives hints and tips on how to start a script.
The second link is a sample script template to show the best layout of a script and how long it should be,
The last link gives the dimensions of the margins and the other important punctuation etc. that needs to be added, to give your script the professional look.

This link below is the original script for the film 'The Blind Side'. This one is the most important to me whilst creating my coursework because I chose this film as one of my comparison examples.

http://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Blind-Side,-The.html

The IMSDB is a very well known website within the film industry as it holds a range of samples from film franchises such as Harry Potter etc. It also has sample scripts from Television shows such as Futurama .

Typography...Script...Typography...Script

Previously Unposted

As my media lessons have been split into focusing on coursework and my exam , these blog posts are starting to jump from one topic to another. I do apologise for this,as I am trying to update you (my audience) on what I am doing within each lesson.

This post is going to be short and sweet , as I am focusing all my attention this week on my coursework.

After deciding on a storyline for my coursework, I decided to push myself and aim to find a suitable font for my poster and DVD cover, whilst still writing up my script.

The deadline for the script (the pre-production) is closer than the deadline for the DVD Cover (post-production). However I thought that I would make things a little easier on myself by planning ahead and making sure I had all of the research I needed to create all of my coursework quickly and efficiently so that I would have time to make corrections if needed.

Taking a break from script writing, I decided to create a word document of all the fonts (Typography) that I could potentially use on my production pieces. After asking around my peers and both my media teachers I narrowed the options down to three . All 3 of these fonts I found on the website
www.dafont.com .

The reason I chose to use this site, is for the simple reason that the fonts are easy to download, there are a range of different designs to choose from , and you can even try out the font in the title that you want.

Below are the 3 fonts that I have to choose from for my production pieces. The links show my film title in the 3 fonts that I chose.

Extra Links

Previously Unposted

After yesterday's post, I remembered that I had a a few more links that helped me with my pre-production work.

Pre-Productions- This is the work that has to be completed before any filming can be started. This stage includes, writing scripts and storyboards for the setting of the film and the actors.  The film idea also develops more within this stage.

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/ripper-street-episode-1.pdf       - This link here is from the BBC website. It is the first part of the 'Ripper Street' script. I used this link because it helped me with the layout of my script and it also showed me how to introduce new characters/ settings etc. I definitely found this link to be helpful .. and I hope you (my audience) do to :)

Coursework: Links

To help me create the best possible coursework piece, I decided to do some of my own research by looking at different links on the internet to help me write my own treatment to pitch my film to the rest of my media class.

Below are some website links to the information that I researched.

The first link does not work properly, so you have to type it manually into your search engine. This one is a
a guide on how to write a script.

The second link does work and is a guide on how to write a treatment.

The last link is a step-by-step guide on how to create a storyboard.  (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storyboard) This link explains in better detail than I every could what a Storyboard is  :)

Research Methods

Previously Unposted

When starting to research my potential film idea my teacher gave me a list of research methods that could help me to find relevant information to help me with my coursework.

I decided to type up the list, in case I did lose the original. From this I looked at the research methods and added information about them to help me when I wrote my Bibliography in my report :)

Here is the list that I typed up :)

Coursework: The Briefing

Previously posted on 19/2/13

The Brief  For my coursework I had to come up with a film idea. I had to create a pre-production and production piece. The pre-production was the option of either writing a script or creating a story board. The production piece was the same for everyone; create a DVD cover and at least 1 poster that conforms to the codes and conventions of your film idea.

I decided to create a script for my pre-production and a teaser poster and a DVD cover for my production tasks. I chose this option because I found through my practice task (see hobbit post) I was quicker at creating the script, and I enjoyed playing around with the dialogue, which means I can be more imaginative.

My film genre is going to be true story, because I wanted to show how not everyone has the perfect childhood and how they deal with these imperfections.  To ensure anonymity , I altered the characters names and the situations so more people could relate to the idea. I also thought about writing a disclaimer so that the audience knew that all characters names were fiction. I did some secondary research on the genre by looking at different true films such as 'The Blind Side, 'Titanic', and 'The Lovely Bones'.  I analysed film posters to get a better understanding of what my poster should convey, such as images/ typography to give the audience the correct image. Creating a mood board of true movie film posters/ DVD covers helped me to compare and contrast the types of colours/ layouts/ fonts used.

For script assistance I studied different types of scripts (websites mentioned below) and used Google’s search engine to look at different types of script layouts. Relating back to my practice task also gave me inspiration.

These are the questionnaires that my focus group  filled in.
I undertook primary research through a focus group by asking them questions about my idea. I took note of their answers and adapted my work towards their responses. From this I decided to target my film towards the female population aged 12A and above.

When I knew who my target audience was, I started looking at audience theories. The one that applies to my work is the uses and gratification theory because it reflects my text and the theory shows how an audience can relate to what they see, which is the way want my target audience to react to my film.

My focus group also came up with more true movies:

  • Anne Frank
  • Boy in the striped pyjamas'
  • Call the midwife ( TV Drama Series)
  • Life of Pi
  • Music of the heart

For more research I looked at the marketing campaigns and DVD releases for these titles for inspiration. As the Life of Pi has recently been released, I compared all the film posters and made notes on what made the poster eye-catching and the composition of the whole text.

Using the BARB website I found that call the midwife had a rating of 10.18 million viewers on 30th December 2012 and 10.85 million viewers on the 3rd February 2013. This hints that there is a huge audience out there that enjoy watching films/TV series based on real life. This research helps with my marketing campaign as it shows that I would have to persuade a wide audience range to see my film.

Next I found different true story books for film title ideas. To help me decide, I wrote out a list of different titles that I came up with and narrowed it down to a top 3:
  • Losing reality
  • The reality of being me
  • Life is calling
I added these titles to my questionnaire and the focus group helped me to decide on LOSING REALITY as the title. Once I decided on the title it was time to write my script!

Here are some of the websites that I used to gather the research :

COURSEWORK:The Start

Previously Unposted

Soon after submitting my work about 'The Hobbit', just after the Christmas Holidays, my teacher gave us a  2 hour introduction into our Coursework for the year.  Within these 2 hours we were shown
* PowerPoint's with information on
*Booklets to guide us
* Templates
* Research links for websites
* Recommended books/newspapers
 *Examples from previous students work
*Examiners reports

As a class we were also told that as homework we should go and research some ideas we may have about our coursework.

We were also given a basic outline of everything that was expected of us to complete and a rough idea of how long we would have to work on the coursework.

Due to the amount of information that we were given, my class were told that our next media lesson would be our first official coursework lesson, where we would get the brief for our coursework and would be given the lesson to work on our ideas we may have and to have a one-on-one conversation with the teacher so that we could agree on a coursework idea and sign it on the brief as an official coursework idea.

I will keep this blog updated on the progress I make whilst doing my coursework.

Please Note: I will be updating this blog with posts concerning my coursework and my exam preparation :)

The Hobbit: Extra Work

Previously Unposted
Hi everyone,

Following on from my post about my Christmas homework about 'The Hobbit', I decided to upload a photo of the mood board that I created to help me with the research :)

My definition of a  Mood Board is: a page/sheet (generally A4/A3 sheet of paper) filled with images (can contain some words ) that are all related to the same topic. Mood Boards can be created for anything and everything e.g. films, books, colours, make-up , superhero's etc. :)

The mood board I created consisted of images from 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord Of The Rings'.

Due to the film being highly publicized and a highly anticipated film release, it was difficult to find images that were not posters or book covers or even images that were not related to 'The Lord Of The Rings' franchise :) .

The Hobbit: Evaluation

Hey guys,

I know I have not updated my blog in a while, but I have a good excuse :)
Over the Christmas holidays I have been working on a project that is going to prepare me for my coursework in 2013.

The project that I have been working is a marketing campaign for 'The Hobbit'. For the marketing campaign I had the task of :
*Doing background research about the book/film
*Create a storyboard for the first half of Chapter One of the book
* Write the pitch and treatment for the film
*Create a DVD cover
*Make a teaser poster for the film

For the research I read some of the book to get a better idea of the characters and settings and I looked on Google images for DVD covers of action-adventure films. I also created a mood board of all different interpretations of 'The Hobbit' and I created a list of the different films that were the same genre of the film, such as Tron, Harry Potter and a few more. Another thing that I did was look at different Harry Potter film posters for ideas.

I adapted the codes and conventions from the research through a number of different ways. For my pre-production tasks; the storyboard and the script, I used the mood boards to get an idea of what the characters could look like and I also read the book to see how the characters are conveyed and how the Author of the book, wanted the characters to speak.

For the research into the target audience, I looked at the age ratings for the rest of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I also looked at the age ratings for other action-adventure. Another bit of research that I did was some secondary research on who would go and see an action-adventure film.I did this by looking at the codes and conventions of the film and seeing what audience it could appeal to.

I took all of the research for my target audience and used it in the process of creating my production artifacts. I did this by looking at all the research and deciding what age rating I should give the film and then designed the poster and the DVD cover based on what I thought would be suitable for the age rating. I also used Google to look at what the types of codes and conventions a film of that age rating portrayed.

After finishing my DVD cover and teaser poster I looked over them and I am happy with the way they turned out. Some of the features I am happy with are :
* I am happy with the colours that I used as I find they work well for what I am trying to convey.
*The design I have used works well with the colours.
*The layout of the design as it fits well on the cover . (The DVD)
* The design fits well with the story of the book.
*I believe that how I've drawn them conveys how I see it in my minds eye.

Looking over the production artifacts I have noticed that there are certain things that I could have done better.
* I could have spent more time on both of the designs
*There could have been more annotations on the products
* The poster could include more of the magical aspect of the book/film
* Maybe the colours on the poster could have been more realistic

The overall effectiveness of my final products is not as effective as it could be, however I do think that they work well with the film and the book. They also convey what I am trying to get across towards the audience, and for my first crack at doing this sort of thing, I think it turned out pretty well.

HARRY POTTER WARNER BROS TOUR

Previously Posted 13/12/12

Hi everyone,

I went on an amazing trip to the Warner Bros Studio that is situated in Watford, London, England.  I went on this trip with the rest of my media studies class on the 11/12/12 and we went there so that we could see how the Harry Potter films were created and how the film was taken from script to screen.

As I live in South Wales the trip was about 3 hours bus journey but it was worth it. In my opinion it was an absolutely amazing day, and I would advise anyone to go and visit the studio, especially if you are a Harry Potter fan. It is a great way to spend the day and to learn how all 8 of the films are created.

To start with when you actually get to the studio you walk into a huge lobby that, as it is the christmas season, contained a giant christmas tree decorated with gold and green tinsel, stars and baubles. All around the walls there are big canvas' of the main characters within the film, and the model of the flying car that is seen in the second movie is hovering above the information desk. When the tour starts you follow the barriers to a room where a tour guide will show you a brief video of how Harry Potter all started.

When the video is over you will be escorted into another room that looks like a cinema, where you are shown a short documentary about what the tour is going to be about and it also has the 3 main characters from the films, telling you about the actual filming process and their experiences since they started filming the very first Harry Potter film. Next you are shown through two main doors and are taken into the 'Great Hall'. After this you are free to look around the whole studio, taking as many pictures as your heart desires.

As our group was there for educational purposes we had the privileged to partake in a short lesson all about the script to screen process. Within this lesson I learned a number of different techniques and terms that will come in handy when I start to create my own movie scripts/storyboards/posters.

We were sat in a room that was set up as a make shift classroom, with a smart-board and different costumes from the movies.  First of all the tour guide told us what the session was going to include and the health and safety aspects in case of a fire.

When the session started we were told how Harry Potter came to be made into a film and we all had to give our ideas on how ideas are made into films e.g books, imaginations, historic events, life stories  and many more.

We then found out that after the idea has been created , before it becomes a film, a representative of the idea must stand in front of a companies producers, for example Warner Bros, Fox, Dream works, Columbia etc, and have to give a pitch about their idea with no more than 25 words.

If the producers are impressed with the pitch and the idea then they will decide on two options; give you all the money and let you make the film or they could decide to give you half the money to start with to see how well the film works.

After this decision has been made, you will have to produce a treatment which must be about half a page maximum. The treatment includes

Another fact that I learnt was that there are a lot of different jobs and peoples that are included in the making and creating of a film. For the Harry Potter films there were at least 4,000 people involved.  Some of the jobs are; prop designers, artists, camera crew, script writers, producers, costume designers and many, many more.

As  I mentioned we were there for educational purposes, we were given the chance to see one of the original scripts for Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, and what an actual script should look like and what should be included within a script.

We also got the chance to look at some of the original storyboards for the very first Harry Potter film. With these we saw how a proper story board was supposed to look like and what needed to be included in it. By this I mean that a story board has to include, stage directions, dialogue,  camera angles, colour, detail and prop ideas.

There was also a part of the session where three of my media class were chosen to read different parts of the scripts, to show us how a script was supposed to be read and how detailed it had to be.

The tour guide also showed us one of the characters costumes to highlight how much work was put into the film and what the outfits where supposed to show the audience about the character. The costume that my class was shown was the trousers that ' Hagrid' wears in the second film. The trousers were very wide and very long which is to show how tall the character actually was.

At the end of the session we were give our own template for a storyboard to help us with our own projects.

In my opinion the whole day was a highlight for me. However I have managed to think of my 10 best highlights of the trip.

1) My very first highlight of the trip has to be the very last room we visited. This is because there as a huge room sized model of the actual school, Hogwarts and the detail that is shown on the model is spectacular.

2) The second highlight of the day would have to be actually walking into and through the Great Hall. This is because the set looked exactly how it does within the films.

3) Seeing the costumes of some of the characters e.g Professor Snape, Lord Voldemort and Molly Weasley, because it was fascinating to see how tall the actors really are and to also see them up close. ( Although it would have been better actually meeting the actors themselves, but that's just me being picky)

4) Walking down the 'Hogwarts bridge' was another highlight for me because it was dark and it gave the bridge more of a Harry Potter feel to it, especially with the different coloured floodlights shining on it.  (which is shown in the pictures opposite and below)

5)  Walking into Dumbledore office. This is one of my highlights because the office looks exactly like it does in the film and , if i'm honest, looks even better close up as it has everything it needs to show the power and wealth that Dumbledore had.

6) Being able to see the different models of all the creatures that are shown in all 8 films and how they were designed because it has made me appreciate the time that the designers must have taken to make the creatures just right.

7) Standing on the back of the 'Knight Bus' because it is probably going to be the only time I will get to have that experience. Also it was a strange experience as it was probably the only triple decker bus I will ever see.

8) Another one of my highlights of the day was seeing how big that costume was for the character of 'Hagrid', because I did not realise until that day how big the character was supposed to have been.

9) Seeing how the cast and crew made the scenes where the main character is supposed to be flying etc. This is a highlight for me because it was different to see how the people behind the scenes made the sequences so believable in the films.

10) The last highlight that makes it into my top 10 has to be having the opportunity to take as many pictures as I wanted.I say this as my highlight because it gave me to opportunity to take my time and look at everything I wanted to and to have some of the photographs as memories of the trip.

And that my friends is the ( very long) summary of my day at the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour :)

If I missed anything out that you would like to know, please comment and I will  gladly answer :)
